[challenge] fandom snowflake days o1-o5

Fandom Snowflake Challenge banner 2018

day o1.
in your own space, talk about why you're participating in snowflake and, if you’ve participated in the past, how the challenge has affected you. what drew you to it? what did you take away from it? what do you hope to accomplish this year?

i've participated in the past in 2014, 2015, and 2016 but didn't manage to do every day in 2016. i was originally drawn to because it seemed lowkey and friendly and a good way to get into the habit of posting regularly. i've gained a lot of wonderful fanworks and resources and people. all sorts! i hope to actually manage to get through every day this year - even if i'm a bit late!

day o2.
in your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

i recently got a comment asking permission to translate one of my fics and i've never had someone ask to translate or transform any of my works before. it meant so much to know that someone liked what i wrote enough to want to take the time to translate it into another language. especially since it's only a three sentence fic! they must have really enjoyed it if they want to translate it which really touched me. i'll never forget it.

day o3.
in your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.
three things i have enjoyed recently are:
  • the haunting of grimmauld place by (currently) anonymous
  • when grimmauld place begins fighting against harry’s ownership of it, he decides he needs help to train the historic home — but little does he expect that it’ll be malfoy who’s most suitable for the challenge. however, as malfoy and harry get closer, harry comes to understand that expectations aren’t always the best path by which to guide his heart — and in the process learns just what is needed to make a house a home.
  • i can't reccommend this fic highly enough. i love it so much that i'm still writing my novel length comment about how much i enjoyed it despite finishing it several days ago. everything about this is perfect. the characters and their development, the relationship and their development, the humor, the angst. everything. this has earned it's place in my top fics of all time.
  • landslide | mike & el by paceysjo
  • full disclosure, this vidder is a friend of mine but even if she weren't i'd be reccing this vid anyway. the pacing of the editing is beautifully done, the clips match the lyrics so well, the parallels are so wonderful, and i love the use of interchanging color and greyscale. a beautiful vid.
  • i feed. i protect. i teach. by meenist
  • this art is gorgeous. the bright yellow of the background, the blue and purples hues in hopper's shirt and hair, how the artist managed to capture david harbour's facial expressions so well. it's just a beautiful piece of art overall.

day o4.
in your own space, create a fannish wishlist. no limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see.

more feedback on fanworks. not just for myself but for everyone. it can be hard to comment if you're consuming something quickly before doing something else or if you get anxious about to say. i have both of those problems so i keep a list of fanworks i've enjoyed that i'll go back to and leave a comment on once i have time/have fleshed out my thoughts. also, as a fic writer, former vidder, and graphic/icon maker, even just a simple i like this! goes a long way.

i also want to encourage people to leave feedback on lesser known/appreciated fanworks. i got this idea from [personal profile] writcraft who has a drarry reccing initative going on where people are reading and reccing drarry fics under 300 kudos. i thought this was a really great idea. lack of feedback can be really disheartening. i personally have three ficlets on ao3 with 0 kudos and every time i see that i wish just one person had liked it. so i'd like to see people do it in all fandoms and fanworks but with slightly different parameters.
  • for fics: read/comment/eccommend anything under 50 kudos
  • for fanvids: watch/comment/recommend anything with under 5 comments
  • for podfic: listen to/comment/recommend anything with under 5 kudos
  • for fanart: comment/reblog/recommend anything under 25 notes (on tumblr) or 5-10 comments

i wasn't t sure how to alter that number for other fanworks, such as podfics, fanvids, etc. as i'm not involved with making those. for fanvids, i based it off my old fanvids and how many comments i got. i browsed the podfic and podfic works tag on ao3 and discovered that a lot of podfics have 0-1 kudos which is why i say under 5 kudos for podfics. if anyone has any suggestions for any other fanwork and the parameters, don't hesitate to let me know!

day o5.
recommend a fannish or creative resource.
  • sorry for the self promo but i run a resource/reference blog on tumblr: riferimentos. i found that most resource blogs on tumblr post just photoshop/giffing/etc. related stuff and most reference blogs post just references but i wanted something with both in one place so that is what this is! i'm currently in the process of updating the tag system and it's a lot because i tag everything extensively but you can click here for resources (photoshop and the like, tumblr themes, etc.) and here for references (writing references, recipes, etc.) and if you're looking for something specific there's a search bar on the side! just type what you're looking for, i.e. - recipe or psd, and every post containing that word will show up!
  • i also have a resource masterpost on my journal here with links to brushes, fonts, gradients, layouts, programs, screencaps, stock photos, textures, tutorials, and more!
  • for writing, the blogs amandaonwriting, howtofightwrite, thewritershelpers, writeworld, writingwithcolor, yeahwrite, and referenceforwriters which hasn't been updated since july but has a great archive.
  • i'm not sure if other people do this but i personally follow roleplay help blogs and roleplay inspiration blogs even though i'm not a roleplayer! rph (roleplay help) blogs post a lot of useful writing resources for any writer and roleplay inspiration blogs post quotes/pictures/etc. that can be inspiring to anyone! i'd reccommend clevergirlhelps and museinspo. for graphic makers, roleplay inspiration blogs also usually have a tag like this one containing faceless (meaning the face of the person in the photo is obscured in some way) photos that could be used in your graphics!
  • i also have some blogs that could provide you with information/inspiration. mentalflossr has, natgeofound has various pictures found in national geographic that could serve as inspiration, and theoddmentemporium has posts about strange history.
  • also want to point out google ngram viewer. if you write historical fiction and want to avoid anachronisms this is great. you type a word or phrase in the search bar and it tells you the usage of that word over time. it also has links to documents containing the words your searching for at the bottom!
whew. that was text and link heavy, wasn't it? sorry, y'all. i'll try to be less wordy next time.
