notes: for [community profile] 100words' prompt 250: amnesty week xxv, specifically prompt 229: epilogue. title taken from the quote "we deserve a soft epilogue, my love," which comes from this poem.

When she retires to her bed each night, Marianne is haunted by the life she and Héloïse never got to have. No matter how much she resists, her mind inevitably drifts to dreaming of what could have been. She thinks they would have had a simple life, a quiet one, one with foamy turquoise seas and dark, jagged, cliff laden shores. She pictures sketching, and Vivaldi, and unrestrained laughter. Pictures love. They would have been Eurydice and Orpheus retold, transformed into a fairer ending. They deserved that, didn’t they? Or are they simply Hymen’s prophecy reincarnated, destined for eternal suffering?
