Hello out there! :D Thanks for having me this week. I hope you're in the mood for countin' your written words, because...

Today's theme is double drabbles. Although we were playing it loose with Tuesday's theme, on this fine Thursday, all fills must be strictly 200 words in length, according to whatever counting method/program/app/tool you prefer. There are no special rules for today's prompts.

Feel free to add specifics to your prompts, like whether you'd prefer a gen fill over something shippy, or if you have a squick or trigger you hope to avoid. Original fiction, fanfiction, and fanfic crossovers are always welcome. ~_^

Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and the fandom's full name
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here. Unfortunately, DW doesn’t have a cut tag, so use your best judgment when it comes to spoilers.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above-mentioned spoiler cut.

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Some examples to get things started...
+ Andor (Star Wars), Karis Nemik +/ Arvel Skeen (+ any), (pre-canon? canon AU?) it's a marathon not a sprint
+ The Bear, Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto +/ Richard "Richie" Jerimovich (+ any), old habits die hard
+ The Fantastic Four: First Steps (MCU), Ben Grimm +/ Johnny Storm (+ Reed Richards/Sue Richards), (pre-canon) the day before their space mission

We are on AO3! If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3, please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2025 collection. See further notes on this option here.

Not feeling any of today’s prompts? You can use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community. Fret not, DW members; we are working on a way to search through old entries for prompts for you! As of right now, the best way to search for a lonely prompt on DW is to search the community’s archive, which can be found [[HERE]].

While the use of LJ's advanced search and DW’s archive are options, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching in the future.

As a friendly reminder about our schedule, Lonely Prompts and sharing completed fills are encouraged on Sundays, while new themes and prompts are posted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are a Free for All day. We'll share our posts on DW and LJ for everyone's convenience. Keep an eye out for notifications!

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so… and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

It's Steve Rogers just after he came out of the ice.

It's also someone else before that - a new character's origin, grounded like Steve's in real history.

The first page hits the reader with that, a reminder of the passage of time - appropriate when the story involves fresh-from-the-ice Steve.

The new character's young - and shocked. )

adjudicate

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 7, 2025 is:

adjudicate • \uh-JOO-dih-kayt\  • verb

To adjudicate a dispute between two parties is to make an official decision about which party is right; to adjudicate a case or claim is to settle it judicially. Adjudicate is also used to mean “to act as judge.”

// The case will be adjudicated in the state courts.

// The property title cannot be transferred until a case concerning the affected rights of way is adjudicated.

See the entry >

Examples:

“… [Pete] Rose’s candidacy won’t be adjudicated on the writers’ ballot. According to the Hall’s voting rules, players who are retired for more than 15 years are considered not by 400-plus writers but rather a smaller ‘era committee,’ comprised of a mixture of former players, executives, and media members.” — Scott Lauber, The Philadelphia Inquirer, 14 May 2025

Did you know?

Adjudicate, which is usually used to mean “to make an official decision about who is right in a dispute,” is one of several terms that give testimony to the influence of jus, the Latin word for “law,” on our legal language. Others include judgment, judicial, prejudice, jury, justice, injury, and perjury. What’s the verdict? Latin “law” words frequently preside in English-speaking courtrooms.

Recent Reading: The Dispossessed

"There was a wall. It did not look important. It was built of uncut rocks roughly mortared. An adult could look right over it, and even a child could climb it. Where it crossed the roadway, instead of having a gate it degenerated into mere geometry, a line, the idea of a boundary. But the idea was real. It was important. For seven generations there had been nothing more important than that wall."

I knew this book was going to hit hard from the opening paragraph above, and it did not disappoint. I've enjoyed Ursula Le Guin's work before--The Left Hand of Darkness is one of my favorite books—and I absolutely see why The Dispossessed is considered one of her crowning pieces. The setting for this book is a planet and its moon—Urras, the planet, is a lush world not dissimilar from Earth, which is home to several capitalist countries and at least one socialist country; and Anarres, the moon, which is a dusty, resource-scanty place home to a society of anarchists who fled from Urras just under two hundred years ago. The core of the novel concerns Shevek, a theoretical physicist from Anarres who chooses to relocate to Urras.

Le Guin captures truly great sci-fi because this work is so imbued with curiosity. Le Guin is asking questions at the heart of any great sci-fi work: What defines humanity? What can we achieve, and how is it done, and what does that mean for society? What is society? What does it mean to be alone? What does it mean to be part of a whole? To me, sci-fi can't be truly sci-fi without a measure of philosophy, and The Dispossessed has this in droves.

A pretty successful week, wordcount-wise! Life is still pretty busy and hectic so while the words are flowing, writing time is still in frustratingly short short supply. I've been trying to write at least a little bit every single day, but I still ended up with a couple of zero days this week because sometimes the only available time I have comes at the very end of the day when my brain feels like a boiled potato. Telling myself that all words are good words, and every little bit gets me that much closer to finished!

New words this week : 6935 words which is awesome! About half this wordcount came from a single day, which is even more awesome. It's the best feeling when a new idea just clicks, and the words fly out onto the page.

WIPs worked on this week : 2, with no new WIPs (yay!)

The Old Guard

food truck au : 6165 words which brings the total to 7156 words and I guess I'm not finishing this one in the 5k I thought I would lol. It is pretty close to finished, though, so I think it'll be around 10k (assuming I keep it at a T rating, if I bump it up to E then obviously that'll add an extra scene and take a little longer). Absolutely delighted with it, it's the sort of silly nonsense that I used to write a lot of and it's just so much fun.

Redamancy : 320 words which brings the total to 5872 words. I didn't actually work on this, but I did some writing for the food truck au that started to take it in a direction that I didn't feel really worked for it, and I think I can reuse some of the dialogue in this one so I just copy/pasted all of it over to sort out later.

The entire province is in a drought now, after a generally dry season that was already extremely dry in a lot of areas, and last I heard there was no rain in the forecast. Yesterday official word came out asking people to try to conserve water and telling everyone to stay the hell out of the woods. (Apparently there's a substantial fine, although my understanding is that no such fine has ever been successfully enforced, so that's...great.) So now is the time of hoping the farmers and crops come through as well as possible, and that wildfire season passes us by.

Theme: marriage of convenience, pretend couple, happy endings, genderfuck

Summary: Sarah “Gwen” Rogers was nineteen when she married Bucky Barnes, and she knew at the time just how stupid it was: it wasn’t exactly a brilliant move to marry a man who could never love her, even—or especially—when she knew that she was in love with him.

Neither of them could have predicted the war that came, and if they had, then they sure as hell couldn’t have predicted what would happen when Gwen volunteered for Project: Rebirth.

Reccer's Notes: This is one of the more interesting Captain America genderswaps: what would it do to the essential closeness and devotion of Steve and Bucky's relationship if Bucky was 1000% gay, and Steve was a cis woman? But they still cared about each other as much? They decide to get married, to protect Bucky from gossip, and things go from there. This is such an interesting take on their relationship, on how being a cis woman would affect "Sarah" (especially once she wakes up in modern America after being frozen for seventy years), and her relationship with Sam. All while telling the basic events of the movie.
