[challenge] fandom snowflake days 11 + 12
day 11.
share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
so, i've already talked about taylor swift once during this challenge but i'm going to talk about her again.
fearless, released in 2008, was taylor's sophomore album and what i now lovingly refer to as my 'first depression album.'
in 2008 i was going through my very first bought of depression, though i didn't know that's what it was at the time. all i knew was that i had gone from having a large number of friends to having none, that i felt completely and utterly alone, and that i would do anything rather than go to school each day. i tried to fake being ill almost every day, that's how bad it was.
there's a quote attributed to taylor that goes, "people haven't always been there for me but music always has." this was true of her music, specifically fearless, for me. i played that album so many times i'm surprised it didn't break. i would lie in bed in the dark, singing my heart out to the way i loved you and would take solace in songs like fifteen.
though i'd been an average fan of taylor's since her debut album, fearless is probably the album that kickstarted my love for her. i remember researching her on a gigantic, old desktop computer and finding the accounts of how kind she was and how she'd been known to give her phone number to fans who were having a hard time and i daydreamed about being one of those fans. she and her music were a beacon of hope and i will always be indebted to her for that.
day 12.
in your own space, create a fanwork. make a podfic, an icon, a sketch, a meta, or a rec list. arts and crafts. cross stitch. draft an essay about a particular medium. put together a picspam or a fanmix. write a review of book you love, a ship manifesto, a you-should-be-listening-to-this-band essay. create something.
the fiction isn't flowing today so i'm going to write a 'you should be watching this show' essay.
the west wing is a political drama that first premiered in 1999 and grew to become one of screenwriter aaron sorkin's, and the world's, greatest hits.
i'm sure most people have at least some knowledge of tww so this isn't going to be an introductory essay but rather a 'this is why you should watch/rewatch the show during our current political climate.'
the short answer: it's hopeful. in a way that most things these days aren't.
for me at least, it's a form of escapist fantasy while still being very much rooted in reality. a lot of the issues addressed in the show are still relevant today. which could be viewed as sad but i prefer to look at it like this: this way, i'm seeing issues i'm passionate about being handled by a competent and capable and good president who's on the right side of history, unlike those currently in power. for example, here are some of the issues addressed in the first season of the show and where bartlet (the president in the show) stands:
MR. LYDELL this is one of my favorite episodes of the west wing, and one of my favorite pieces of television in general. if this doesn't get you to watch, i don't know what will. but i hope you find it because i think the west wing is required viewing for everyone.

- mandatory minimum sentencing (bartlet is in favor of reducing)
- gun control (barlet is in favor of it)
- drug addiction (bartlet wants a focus on/an increase in treatment instead of punishment)
- racial profiling (bartlet, unlike some other real life politicians who shall remain nameless, isn't racist)
- hate crimes (barlet signs in a hate crimes bill)
MR. LYDELL
I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS PRESIDENT, WHO I VOTED FOR, I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW HE CAN TAKE SUCH A COMPLETELY WEAK-ASS POSITION ON GAY RIGHTS.
MRS. LYDELL
JONATHAN...
MR. LYDELL
GAYS IN THE MILITARY, SAME-SEX MARRIAGE, GAY ADOPTION, BOARDS OF EDUCATION - WHERE THE HELL IS HE? I WANT TO KNOW WHAT QUALITIES NECESSARY TO BEING A PARENT THIS PRESIDENT FEELS MY SON LACKED?
